Scoliosis as one of the most common diseases of the musculoskeletal system nowadays

One of the most common problems that patients come to me with is scoliosis of different types. In this article, I will talk about the methods that I use in the manual therapy for scoliosis, and what effect can be expected in which cases.

At the beginning, it must be pointed out that primarily the therapy of scoliosis involves manual therapeutic effects of three types:

  • warming up the muscles,

  • reduction and intensive massaging of the vertebrae

  • and subsequent relaxation.

The main rules that determine the correct implementation of the recovery program using manual therapy techniques, are:

1. Ensuring complete immobility of the patient.

2. Straightening the patient's spine to the maximum possible position (physiological) should occur without pain.

3. Massage technique should take into account the age, physical condition of the patient, the degree of development of pathology and concomitant diseases.

4. Ensuring optimal intensity and depth of exposure for each muscle group.

With scoliosis of the 1st degree, the manual therapy helps to correct posture disorders, strengthen the muscle corset in the back and chest. Therapeutic procedures have a preventive effect, forming the correct position of the segments of the musculoskeletal system, excluding the development of a pathological condition in the future.

With scoliosis of the 2nd degree of the disease, changes in the position of the vertebrae become noticeable, so the procedures are aimed to eliminate the main symptoms of the deformity. Manual therapy has a preventive effect, forming the correct position of the segments of the musculoskeletal system, excluding the development of a pathological condition in the future. In addition to manual therapy, recreation methods can be prescribed (exercises are necessary to maintain proper posture).

Scoliosis of 3 and 4 degrees requires manual therapy and recreation of high intensity and duration. The physio therapist uses deep rubbing techniques, kneading the back from the side where the displaced vertebrae stick out. If a patient is diagnosed with an S-shaped curvature of the spinal column, then the most serious physio therapy is required, which should only be carried out by an experienced specialist. This type of pathology requires a separate study of 4 zones of the back. In addition to physio therapy and recreation therapy, applicators, mechanotherapy, etc. can be prescribed.

With proper systematic physio therapy and recreation, taking into account the individual physiological characteristics of the patient (if necessary, additionally with applicators, the Mulligan technique, mechanotherapy, etc.), it is possible to alleviate the pain syndrome in a short time and slow down the development of the disease.
